Silent Hill 1 Monsters Analysis

Before attempting to understand the Silent Hill 1 Monsters it must first be understood that they are a manifestation of Cheryl’s subconscious, including memories of her previous persona Alessa. As a result of this, the monsters can be manifested from Cheryl’s memories, from Alessa’s, or from a mixture of the two.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Air Screamer

Silent Hill 1 Air Screamer

The Air Screamer is manifested from Cheryl’s subconscious fear of Pterodactyls and other flying dinosaurs that she reads about.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Bloodsucker

Silent Hill Bloodsucker

The bloodsucker is an interesting monster in that it concentrates more on feeding from a pool of blood than it does on Harry. Its symbolism is thus very hard to define precisely beyond saying that it is associated with a dislike of serpents such as snakes and worms. This in turn could be a phallic symbolism, as serpents are generally associated with the male body. However, the most probable explanation is that the Bloodsucker symbolizes an umbilical cord that sucks blood from its mother for the child, in this case the ‘god’. The bloodsucker evolves into the sewer monster in Silent Hill 3.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Claw Finger

Silent Hill 1 Claw Finger

The Claw Finger can be found most commonly in the school and occasionally in the sewers. Its manifestation bears resemblance to the image of small demons from fairy tales, but in truth is actually representative of other children bullying Alessa. Subsequently, it attacks in groups in the School and holds onto her, much akin to children physically bullying someone. Furthermore, the sound they make when they notice Harry is the laughter of children played backwards.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Creeper

Silent Hill 1 Creeper

The creeper represents Alessa’s basic and primal fear of insects and bugs, particularly those that bite or sting. Beyond that, it has little symbolism associated with it.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Cupboard Monster

The Cupboard Monster that can be found in the Hospital Basement is an instantly lethal creature should Harry open the cupboard. What it really represents is the ‘god’ growing in Alessa, and what will happen should it escape. As a result, it is an example of forewarning.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Floatstinger

The Floatstinger is manifested from Alessa’s memories of her childhood. Much like the Twinfeeler, the float stinger was an insect specimen that was used to decorate her room. Through the power of the otherworld, it has become malignant and enlarged representing Alessa’s transition from childhood to a powerful supernatural figure.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Groaner

The Groaner takes the form of a fairly large, skinned dog. Here there is a two-fold representation, the first is that the Groaner represents Cheryl’s fear of dogs attacking her and the second is that Alessa manifests pain upon the dog. As her skin was burned, so the dog’s skin is missing.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Hanged Scratcher

The hanged scratcher is a composition of a number of Alessa’s subconscious fears. The first of these is a worsening of Alessa’s fear of insects and bugs as Harry goes deeper into the ‘otherworld’. The second of these is her fear of adults, with the Hanged Scratcher representing a fear of malicious adults. Thus it basically serves as an extension of the Mumbler monster as it would be in adulthood.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Incubator

Incubator is the result of getting a bad ending to the game, with a mother of god figure resembling an angelic female attacking Harry. The figure itself no doubt represents Alessa’s vision of what the mother of god should look like.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Incubus

The Incubus is Alessa’s imagining of God as taught to her by her mother, Dahlia. Interestingly, an Incubus is actually a demon that impregnates a woman during the night and then sneaks away. As a result, the Incubus is simultaneously a vision of god and a vision of a demonic action in which a creature impregnates a woman against her will.

Interestingly, the Incubus also looks much like artistic renderings of the demon Baphomet. It is an occult belief that Baphomet represents the union of sperm and egg, thus in turn pregnancy. As a result, it makes sense that the image of God would be Baphomet for Alessa.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Larval Stalker

Silent Hill 1 Larval Stalker

The Larval Stalker represents Alessa and Cheryl being teased at school, but does not represent physical bullying as the Mumbler does. Interestingly, the Larval Stalker ‘teases’ Harry and the player by running about and being intimidating, but never actually causing direct harm.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Mumbler

The Mumbler can be found most commonly in the school and occasionally in the sewers.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Night Flutter

The Night Flutter is a version of the Air Screamer that has been enhanced and strengthened by the power of the otherworld and Alessa’s memories being brought up through Cheryl. As a result, its head has become covered in worms and its form more human. Due To Alessa’s negative view of the humans around her, the Night Flutter is more humanoid than the Air Screamer. It also represents Alessa’s age difference to Cheryl, being a grown up version of the Air Screamer.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Parasitized Doctor

Silent Hill 1 Parasitized Doctor

Much like the Puppet Nurse, the Parasitized Doctor is the result of Alessa’s negative experience in hospital and subsequent fear of Doctors. As a result, the Parasitised Doctor is infested in the same manner as the nurse, though uses a similar scalpel-type weapon. The reason for this is that Alessa would have perceived the scalpel as being a weapon due to the pain caused by them.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Puppet Cybil Bennett

Cybil Bennet becomes corrupted by the town in the same manner as the nurse and doctors as she is also a member of the public institutions that Alessa perceives as evil.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Puppet Nurse

Silent Hill 1 Puppet Nurse

The Puppet Nurse is the result of Alessa’s traumatic experiences in hospital. Each of them has a parasite protruding from their back indicating that they are infested and under the control of a malignant force. The fact that they are under the control of something or someone else accounts for the word ‘puppet’ in their name. The Puppet Nurse wields a scalpel as Alessa would have perceived them as being a weapon, rather than a surgical implement.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Romper

Silent Hill 1 Romper

The Romper basically represents Alessa’s fear of Adults. For this reason, its various attacks and movements represent an adult pursuing a child. For instance, the creature itself is bent over and leaning down. Secondly, it pins Harry down in the same manner that adults do to children.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Split Head

Silent Hill 1 Split Head

The Split Head is derived from Alessa’s memory of a fairy tale in which a knight slew a monster. Harry, who is brave and attempting to save his daughter, symbolizes the knight in the story. The creature itself exists in the school because that is the location where Cheryl or Alessa imagined it while reading a book.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Stalker

The Stalker appears towards the end of Silent Hill and is basically a version of the Larval Stalker that attacks Harry. Furthermore, the Stalker tends to be difficult to see and even more ghost-like than the Larval Stalker. The fact that it attack as opposed to the Larval Stalker that would not suggests that the malignancy of the otherworld is increasing.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Twinfeeler

Silent Hill 1 Twin Feeler

As the Otherworld begins to become stronger, insect specimens that were present in Alessa’s room begin manifest in a particularly large and potent form. The Twinfeeler is one of these, and attacks Harry beneath the shopping mall.

Silent Hill 1 Monsters: Wormhead

The wormhead is very similar to the groaner, a dog-like figure with worms crawling about its head. In essence, it is basically the groaner corrupted even further from a standard dog to a stage where it is rotting and embodying death. It represents the growth of the Groaner in the same manner as Cheryl would have grown to be Alessa.
