How to Solve Punkbuster Problems

There are two main ways to solve the most regular problems with Punkbuster: updating punkbuster manually and checking to make sure your Firewall is not blocking it.

Manually Updating Punkbuster

One of the problems that generally occurs with punkbuster is that, for whatever reason, it is unable to update fast enough automatically. When you are playing a game Punkbuster actually is sometimes updating in the background. The problem is that if your connection is not slow enough or if it just is not working the software is designed to presume you must be deliberately preventing update and thus could be cheating. As a result you end up being kicked.

The solution to this problem is to manually update punkbuster. To do this, go to and download the PBSetup software suitable for your operating system. Then run it and it should automatically find the games you have. Choose the game you need to get running with Punkbuster and update it. There is a very good chance that this will fix your problems.

Check Your Firewall

This one is a little more difficult to write a precise guide for as the firewall in use differs from computer to computer. As such you may need to figure it out on your own, but all decent firewall software packages will have an icon in the system tray and a menu option for allowing specifically applications or programs through. If there does not seem to be a menu item for this, look for a tab called ‘permissions’. Look through this list of programs for PnkbstrA.exe and PnkbstrB.exe. In my experience, PnkbstrB.exe is the one that is likely to be blocked or partially blocked, so make sure to completely allow it through your firewall.

Manually updating Punkbuster and then making sure it has permission to get through your Firewall will solve the bulk of problems with the software and get your games working properly.
