Top 7 Funniest Elderly Characters on TV

There have been some great elderly comedy characters on television. Here is a simple list of the 7 funniest elderly characters.

Marie Barone

Marie Barone

Marie from Everybody Loves Raymond is the obvious choice for first. She is the master of the subtle insult and back-handed compliment, never directly expressing her contempt in a way that would allow those around her to respond back appropriately. She treats Aimee and Robert well, allows them to stay at her home, spoils them all with the intention of getting them to have children. Manipulative, creepy, insulting and hilarious, Marie is great.

Frank Costanza

Frank Costanza

George’s father was in the running for first place and it is only because Marie is the true centre of Everybody Loves Raymond that she outranks him. Frank Costonza is a short tempered, neurotic and eccentric red-head from Queens who, infuriated by the rush to buy gifts at Christmas, invented his own holiday: Festivus. The Festivus episode of Seinfeld remains one of the best, with George’s boss studying the proceedings as though he is an Anthropologist.

Martin Crane

Martin’s down to earth nature serves as the foil for Frazier and Niles’ haughty demeanors. He is at his best when reacting to Frazier and Niles arguing and eccentricities.

Frank Barone

Frank Barone

Interestingly, Frank Barone and Costanza were both war veterans from Korea. Frank’s old school ‘hardness’ makes him the perfect foil for Marie, as her subtle manipulations more often than not go unnoticed.

Morty Seinfeld

Morty Seinfeld #1 Dad Shirt

Morty Seinfeld is Jerry Seinfeld’s father on the hit show. There have been countless great moments with Morty on the show, but the standout is when Jerry gives him a #1 dad t-shirt. He proceeds to wear it day and night, upsetting the other retirement home residents. Seinfeld really was such a great comedy.

Mr. Burns

Mr Burns Mr Snrub

More than just a great character from the show, Mr. Burns is argually the best character in the show. It is highly debateable whether Flanders or Mr Burns are the primary antagonist of the show, for very different reasons. A capitalist with no heart who sold working ammunitions to the Germans and hires Homer as his safety office officer. His weird relationship with Smithers is just icing on the cake. Unfortunately The Simpsons isn’t funny anymore, which is a pity as it was a great show in the earlier seasons.

Pierce Hawthorne

Pierce Hawthorne

This character is a very real character and for anyone that has studied at college or university, a standout. There is always an older student in the class, usually talented but something of a misfit and relic. The best scenes in Community are those in which Pierce’s cultural values clash with his peers while he tries to fit in. His array of masculine sneezes was hilarious. It is a pity that Community is not a better comedy series as it could do a lot more with this character.
