The Five Best Fantasy Movies Ever

The five best fantasy movies ever made are revealed, with a limit of one movie per series. This article may contain spoilers, so beware those that read ahead.

1. Star Wars: The Empire Strike’s Back

While some would argue that the Star War’s series is science fiction, in truth it is very much a fantasy series and has common fantasy archetypes. The force is very much a spiritual and magical force, Luke Skywalker is the typical hero that does not realize his destiny and Han Solo is the rogue with a heart of gold. Star Wars is clearly a fantasy film and the Empire Strike’s back is the best of the trilogy.

2. Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring

The lord of the Rings films are all staple fantasy, but Fellowship of the Ring contains that truest fantasy setting of a group of comrades adventuring to defeat the great evil of the land. It is this precise setting that essentially created games like Dungeon and Dragons and Word of Warcraft. Fellowship of the Ring plays out precisely like a particularly good Dungeons and Dragons campaign, so is a natural inclusion on this list of five best fantasy movies ever.

3. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Half-Blood prince is looking as though it will be the best in the Harry Potter series with some of the funnier scenes of the series, some great scenes with snape and a very tense atmosphere with the death eater’s beginning their assaults.

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End

A list of great fantasy movies would never be complete without having some sort of sea adventure and At World’s End fills that role perfectly with some great performances by an amazing cast and some of the truest fantasy themes in any film to date. Plus, it has a pirate crew with ocean animal heads, such as Davy Jones’ octopus face.

5. Conan the Barbarian

There is something immensely cheesy about Conan the Barbarian, which somehow manages to make it better. Arnold Schwarzenegger plays Conan, who’s family were killed by a band of evil snake creatures that can change their shape to resemble human. Yes, that is correct, snake creatures that can change their shape to resemble humans. There is also a Mongol thief sidekick and Conan’s barbarian lover. It is cheesy and quite ridiculous, but something about the movie just works as fantasy.
